She graduated with a B.A in French and Global Studies from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in 2013; an M.A in French and Francophone Studies from the University of Arizona in 2018; and a Ph.D. in Teaching, Learning, and Sociocultural Studies (major: Language and Literacy; minors: French and Cognitive Science) from the University of Arizona in 2023. Kaitlin’s doctoral dissertation “Language out loud: Investigating the role of lower-level processes in reading and phonological recoding in the initial stages of foreign language acquisition,” investigated the foundational cognitive processes in beginner foreign language acquisition and instruction. This work highlighted the importance of implementing explicit phonetic instruction in lower-level language courses in order to facilitate the foundation for higher level comprehension through oral reading fluency and automaticity in the reading process. Kaitlin’s current professional research investigates the impact of handwriting, drawing, and visual expression as analogue cognitive strategies for learning, specifically in the field of literacy and language acquisition. As an artist, her drawing practice emphasizes literary themes, visual interpretation, creating understanding, and using the act of drawing as reflection, critical processing, and a form of writing.
